Scope and content (abstract)

The Former Soviet Union Archives were created by the Monitoring staff under the authority of the Information Resources Department of the RFE/RL Research Institute. After moving to OMRI the new system of arrangement was introduced with English subject codes and some materials relating to events in 1995-1996 were added to the Archives, such as the War in Chechnya, the Elections of 1995, and others.

The series contains news agency releases, newspaper clippings, excerpts from Moscow Radio and TV monitoring and RFE/RL transcripts. It includes information relating to politics, economics, security issues, social life, foreign affairs, culture, religion and the environmental situation of the Russian Federation and other countries of the former Soviet Union (to a lesser extent) after 1991. The most numerous materials are those covering the period of 1992-1994, while pre-1991 materials are occasional.
