Archival history

This series comprises documents that arrived at the Archivum in envelopes kept in labelled binders. This structure, believed to have been created by Hanák, was preserved. Documents in envelopes have been moved to folders without separating or rearranging them. Binders' labels are indicated in folder titles in brackets, thus sustaining their interrelationships.

After Péter Hanák's death in 1997, the legacy was, according to historian Péter Csunderlik, arranged by a student (Mohácsi, first name unkown), under the supervision of historians Éva Somogyi and Gábor Gyáni, but remained in the late historian's home. The envelopes, in which the documents arrived at the Archivum, were marked with various notes, attributed to Mohácsi. When containing additional information, these are indicated in folders' Notes field as heritage metadata.

The second series reflects Péter Hanák's professional and public role, through biographical documents (such as CVs, publications lists, and interviews), articles and appearances in non-academic media, and a collection of opinions and peer-reviews written by him.

Content and structure

[(Auto)Biographical Documents and Writings]
[By the Danube. Historical observer]
[Career as Historian]
[Publications]

Notes

As the contents of envelopes were not rearranged, folders often include multiple documents with different titles, occasionally in multiple languages. If a folder contains documents with different titles, the folder title includes the title of each document, separated by a slash. If a folder contains the same document in multiple languages, the folder title includes the title of each version, separated by a slash. It is worth checking the folders' Languages field, as in some cases the language of the document title (and consequently that of the folder title) and the language of the text do not match.

Regardless of original language, all titles have been translated into English. Translation primarily relied on the bibliographies included in the following two books: Éva Somogyi (ed.), Polgárosodás Közép-Európában: tanulmányok Hanák Péter 70. születésnapjára (MTA Történettudományi Intézete, 1991); Marius Turda (ed.), The garden and the workshop : disseminating cultural history in East-Central Europe: in memoriam Péter Hanák (Central European University, 1998).

Creation dates were not always indicated on the documents. In such cases, the dates included in folders' Date field are either dates of publication, or cover the date span of all the documents from the original binder at hand.
