Scope and content (abstract)

The USSR and the former Soviet Union countries is the main focus of the documents that comprise this series.

Materials collected include articles from newspapers (e.g., “Pravda", “Communist") and journals (e.g., “Ethnographicheskoe obozrenie"), daily reports from the Radio Liberty, census data, and books’ excerpts. Since these materials were collected and organized by the analyst Ann Sheehy, some hand-written materials can be found among the printed documents.

The documents cover several topics, for example, Soviet history and contain materials on the Soviet army, navy, military forces, official reports on Communist Party Congresses, documents on religion (mainly Islam), demography-related materials (e.g., data from censuses). It also includes materials related to the political system and constitution of the ex-soviet national republics (e.g., Georgia, Belarus’, Kazakhstan), in particular, documents on national processes and national groups in the USSR and former USSR area. A large part of these materials are under the entry CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) and reflect different aspects of the union.

Of particular interest can be materials on certain personalities (e.g., Olmas Qalayan), or documents collected by one person on a particular topic (e.g., Items on human rights collected by Aaron Trehub).
