István György Tóth's main field of expertise was the history of society, civilization and religion in the 17th and 18th century. Among the characteristic social strata and groups he was especially interested in peasantry, soldiers, bourgeoisie, minor nobility and religious groups.
His first important research topic was the history of the Körmend estate, during which he processed and got acquainted with archival sources that partly constituted the basis of his later works. He also researched the spreading and range of reading and writing, the symbiosis of orality and literacy, and the history of schools. He had studied the situation of Catholic missions in early modern Hungary, especially through the lives and activities of missionaries working there.
The unambiguous separation of research notes and copies of sources pertaining to various topics was not always possible. His doctoral dissertation on the social history of the Körmend estate already contained important sections on alphabetization and the history of schools. Later he analyzed the spreading of literacy through the entire history of early modern Hungary. The inventories from his heritage are connected to several of Tóth's research topics: Körmend, Vas County, books, history of mode of living, etc. Thus documents relating to more than one research topic remained with the one that Tóth last used them for. The unity of manuscripts, as well as fragments of manuscripts kept with research notes remained intact.
The majority of xeroxed archival sources originate from the State Archives of Hungary, the Vas County Archives, and the Archivio Storico della Sacra Congregazione de Propaganda Fide in Rome.
