Scope and content (abstract)

Over 250.000 amateur photo prints from before World War I till around 1988. The entire collection amounts to over 250 archival boxes.

The smaller part of the collection are pre- World War II black and white prints arranged in family photo albums. Many of the albums have titles, and the photos are accompanied with captions naming the locations in the pictures.

The second and larger part of the amateur photo collection are the color photographs developed by the Hungarian state-owned company Főfotó Vállalat. The overwhelming majority of this color photograph collection is from the second part of the 1980s. The photographs document people's everyday life in Hungary - children, family holidays at lake Balaton, river Danube, lake Velencei, and family events, and quite typically, houses being built by the prospective homeowners themselves during the weekends - as well as some public, historic events as seen through private eyes, for example 1st of May celebrations in the Kadar regime. Most of the pictures' colors are off, with too much magenta. About 100 thousand color prints are still in rolls, uncut, as they came out of the printing machine at FŐFOTÓ in the 1980s. The smaller part of the color print collection is cut to size, mostly 9x13 cm. The images show faces and private spaces of people whose photos are kept in the archives without their consent and who probably will never be identified. Access to this collection is free for research and academic use, however the reproduction of images within the collection is restricted for privacy reasons.
