Scope and content (abstract)

William Newton-Smith, a Canadian philosopher of science, was one of the founding members and the first chair of the senate at the Central European University (CEU). He was also the executive director of the Open Society Foundations' (OSF) International Higher Education Support Program (HESP). During his tenure as praefectus of Holywell Manor (Balliol College's graduate center, 1989-1997), he was working on the concept and establishment of CEU, and run several programs through HESP. The documents in this fonds cover his activities within both CEU and OSF.

The collection holds materials on the establishment of the CEU and on programs and initiatives of OSF aiming at the economic recovery of Ukraine and the survival of the education system in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as on the founder and sponsor of both entities, George Soros.
