The subfonds consists of textual and video materials relating to the economic, political, social and cultural issues in the USSR and, after its collapse, in the former Soviet Union countries and the Baltic States. Some East European press materials are included as well.
The textual part consists mostly of bulletins compiled in 1979-1992 by RFE/RL Monitoring Unit on daily basis. They contain transcripts of major news and special programs on radio and TV, news agencies' materials and clippings from the central and regional press. After 1992 the monitoring was performed on a contract basis. Materials were sent by in-country contractors from Moscow, Kiev, Minsk and Riga electronically or by fax, and by special courier from the countries of Central Asia and Transcaucasia. Monitoring materials were filed by countries, thereunder chronologically, and also by subject. The visual records consist of videotapes of Moscow TV news and other selected programs. Electronic records have been transferred to Prague along with Belarus, Russian and Ukrainian Monitoring Archives to support broadcasting at RFE/RL and reserch by OMRI analysts, and included into HU OSA 205 fonds.
